Fijenoord leverde machines en werf aan Japan
Messrs. DOK-EN WERF-MAATSCHAPPIJ
WILTON-FIJENOORD N. V.
About 30 years ago, I wrote a letter of inquiry in connection with
the name-plate "18 NSBM 56 FIJENOORD" of the machinery,
that is preserved now in the premises of Mitsubishi Nagasaki Ship
yard, and I received an answer from your company. A copy of.
your letter and a photograph of the machinery are enclosed.
At that time, I had been editing a memorial book of Mitsubishi
Nagasaki Shipyard, called as then West Japan Heavy-Industries
Ltd., thereafter I was changed to the business section and the pur
chasing section of the shipyard, and in 1973, I was transferred to
Imari-city, famous owing to the old-imari pottery.
I came back in Nagasaki on the beginning of this year, and I began
to investigate for the background datas of one naval engine officer
of Holland, De Heer Hardes, who constructed Nagasaki Iron
Works.
I suppose you already well known about the abovementioned offi
cer, Hardes. About 120 years ago, the then government of Japan
was forced to give up the policy of national isolation against fo
reign countries, and hastened to establish the structure of the
Japanese navy.
In 1857, De Heer Hardes arrived in Nagasaki as a member of the
2nd Dutch Naval Training Team, including commander Huijssen
van Kattendijke, medical officer Jhr. J. Pompe van Meerdervoort,
and Hardes made every effort to construct Nagasaki Iron Works,
later called as Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipyard.
Setting up machineries and construction of western style factory
were very difficult for Japanese people, because the industrial
foundation in Japan of that days was poor. De Heer Hardes did
16th April, 1980
not ask help to other people, in spite of those difficulties, and final
ly he could construct the engine factory at Akunoura of Nagasaki.
He returned to Holland in 1861 after completion of the factory.
I think this Hardes's devoted effort of construction the engine fac
tory should be much appreciated by the shipbuilding and engine-
making industry of Japan. In order to emphasis this Hardes's ef
fort, I hope to make dear the background datas of Hardes, such as
his native place, his career before and after staying Japan, and his
portrait and so on. The datas of above-mentioned commander
Kattendijke and medical officer Pompe are already clear now in
Japan.
May I request to you the next points for the above investgation;
1. Please send to me a memorial book of your company (1854-
1954), if you have not a spare book, may make to copy the
pages concerned with Japanese matter.
2. Please write to me the address of the Dutch Navy Depart
ment, and what section of the Department does take charge
of materials for the study of history.
3. And please write to me the address of the National Science
Museum and other institutions in your country, for instance,
Nederlandsch Historisch Scheepsvaart Museum (Amsterdam).
I am sorry to write you and I shall thank you to hear from you.
Yours truly,
Juichi Kusumoto
Nishiyama-machi, 1-43,
Nagasaki-city, Japan.
Al in 1855 schonk de Neder
landse regering een marine
schip aan de Mikado (keizer)
van Japan. Een gedeelte van de
machines was gebouwd door
de NSM, het door Roentgen op
gerichte bedrijf, dat een onder
deel was van het etablisse
ment Fijenoord.
Met het schip ging het trai
ningsdetachement van de Ne
derlandse Marine mee, waaro
ver Mr. Juichi Kusumoto in zijn
brief schreef. Het bevel voerde
kapitein W.J.C. Ridder Huys-
sen van Kattendijke. Een twee
de detachement zou het Japan
se vlootpersoneel opleiden. Er
zaten bekwame mannen in, die
meer deden dan het geven van
militaire adviezen. Tot deze
groep hoorde Hardes.
Dokter Pompe van Meerder
voort begon een medische
opleiding, terwijl Hardes tech
nische vakken ging doceren.
Hij bleek een geweldig organi
sator, die echter als officier het
aanbod om agent van Fije
noord te worden afsloeg. Hij
diende de Nederlandse belan
gen op andere wijze. Er moest
bij het dorp Akunoera worden
gebouwd; er kwamen machine
fabrieken en scheepswerven.
Hardes was de man en het
technische werk werd geleverd
door het Etablissement Fije
noord.
De Nederlandse Handelsmaat
schappij verzorgde de credie-
ten. Na repatriëring van het
tweede detachement bleef
Hardes achter om zijn werk in
Akunoera te voltooien.
De arts Pompe schreef in die
dagen onder meer, dat deze
man van formaat een moeras
heeft herschapen in een fa
briek voor stoomwezen en nij
verheid, die zijn weerga be
oosten Kaap de Goede Hoop
niet kent, behalve dan in Soera-
baja.
Er ontstond een bloeiende han
del tussen Japan en Neder
land, waaraan Fijenoord (NSM)
natuurlijk goed deelnam. Het
leverde plet- en zaagmolens en
de complete machinekamer
installatie van een fregat, dat
Japan in Nederland bestelde
en voorts talloze machinewerk
tuigen van allerlei aard. Toen
de heren Donker Curtius en
Hardes naar Nederland terug
keerden in 1861 kreeg de con
currentie haar kans. Duitse en
Engelse adviseurs traden veel
al in de plaats van de Neder
landse deskundigen.
